Fossil Pinecone in Matrix Araucaria mirabilis
This a incredible specimen. Araucaria mirabilis is an extinct species of coniferous tree from Patagonia, Argentina. The genus Araucaria is divided into 4 sections. A. mirabilis belongs to the section Bunya (of which the only living species is Araucaria bidwillii from Australia). A mirabilis is from the late Jurassic approximately 160 mya. This is a museum piece by virtue of its size (4 1/2") and its condition. It was prepared here in the United States by a very talented gentleman who had acquired it 20 years ago and just recently finished with the preparation.
