#331 Aragonite-Lined Pipe**
This is a section of a water pipe from Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary) in what is now the Czech Republic. Cut into a thin slice and polished, it shows a thick accumulation of Aragonite - about eighty years' worth. According to legend, Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV (for whom the city is named), praised the healing power of the hot springs in the 14th century, and its reputation as a spa destination grew into a major industry in the 19th century. Innumerable celebrities and intellectuals have bathed in the famous mineral waters that flowed through this pipe. It measures
14" across.*-
