Elbaite tourmaline from the Himalaya Mine, Mesa Grande District, San Diego County, California. This crystal comes from the 89 pocket, opened up in 1989 by Bill Larson. It weighs 149 grams and is 2 3/4" tall and 1 1/4" across at its base, it is also a floater and double terminated. The Himalaya mine was first discovered in 1898 and has produced many gem and specimen grade tourmalines. During the early 1900s, Maine and California were the world's largest producers of gem tourmalines. The Empress Dowager Cixi of China loved pink tourmaline and bought large quantities for gemstones and carvings from the then new Himalaya Mine.
